Cilia are the finite hairs that line the windpipe and act like microscopic breathing filters. According to studies, positive ions decrease cilial activity while, conversely, negative ions have a more increasing and positive effect. Himalayan salt lamps are therefore believed to improve breathing by releasing negative ions that filter foreign particles and keep the lungs cleaner in general.
Mauritane Handcrafted 6.75" Salt Lamp is not only visually stunning but provides innumerable health benefits. They are natural negative ion generators. Simply put, salt attracts moisture. The interaction of humid air with the surface of the salt crystal releases negative ions. The negative ions bind to the position ions that are created by electronic devices known as “electronic smog” (computers, television screens, telephones, microwaves, etc.). The positively charged ions lose their...
Said to improve sleep by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain and adding calming energy to the room, Himalayan salt lamps are a must-have for any bedroom. Take this one for example: made in Nepal, it features a circular wood base topped off by a natural 8" rock-shaped design that has been handcrafted from salt crystals with a pink hue. When you turn the light on inside, it casts a warm, amber-hued glow over your ensemble. Arrives in a set of two.
Himalayan salt lamps purify the air through hygroscopy. The salt lamp attracts water from surrounding areas and absorbs the water vapor molecules along with any particles that those molecules may be carrying. The light inside of the lamp helps the salt to warm up, making that water evaporate back into the air while the unwanted, foreign particles stay trapped inside the salt. Science is pretty neat, am I right?

In January of this year, Michael's issued a recall on some of their salt lamps sold under the Lumière brand. Rest assured, the issue and recall had nothing to do with the Himalayan salt itself but reported hazards with the dimmer switch and plug. If you’re looking to purchase a lamp, talk to the retailer and make sure it has been assembled properly and that the piece you’re interested in was not included in the recall.
Admittedly, the negative ion claim didn’t come out of nowhere. There was a 1998 study published in the journal of the American Psychological Association, and a few follow-up studies as well, that suggested negative ions could help reduce the effects of seasonal affective disorder and chronic depression. But the reality is there aren’t any studies suggesting the lamps provide anywhere near the levels of negative ions to have an effect, and when Negative Ions Information Center tested salt lamps for negative ion output, they found so few it was hard to measure.
The Pulpit Rock Glow Natural 6" Salt Lamp can release negative ions into the air, creating an effect similar to an ionizer, purifying the surrounding air. This process is enhanced by the natural process of NACL resulting in the production of negative ions which eliminate the positive ions which are present in our environment, produced by computers, refrigerators, televisions and more. Thus, these lamps make the air clean, fresh and healthy to live in.
Real Himalayan salt lamps are actually solid blocks of Himalayan salt that have been hand-carved. Deep underground mines in Khewra, Pakistan, located on the western edge of the Himalayan Mountains, are the only source of true Himalayan pink salt. The color of Himalayan salt lamps ranges from a light pink to a pinkish orange with the hue a result of the mineral concentration. Within the hollowed-out center of this block of salt is a light bulb that emits both light and heat. A salt lamp is not a lamp at all if it doesn’t have the light and heat source within it. Without that, it’s just a block of salt.

Nowadays, most of us are living in a metaphorical ocean of electromagnetic (EM) radiation which flows from our electronics (ie: television, computer, cell phone, tablet, appliances, sterio, etc). While they may be invisible, the long-term effects of EM exposure can be quite serious. Constant exposure to EM radiation is known to increase stress levels, cause chronic fatigue, and decrease the body’s immune response, among other things.
“The amount of time we spend in front of a screen or holding a phone can generate a lot of positive ions, enough to disrupt our emotional state,” says Michael Terman, professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University’s Medical Center. Terman explained that equalizing these ions with negative ones enhances the mood and eliminates the stressors that can trigger depressive disorders, irritability, and insomnia.
As for the idea that water vapor in the room attracts pollutants, then sticks to the surface of the lamp, that, too, makes little sense, he said. Some pollutants in the air might, by chance, stick to water vapor on the surface of the lukewarm piece of rock salt, but there's no evidence that the meager heat produced by a light bulb could produce significant amounts of pollutant filtering, he said.
One of the most common Himalayan salt lamp benefits is that salt aids in the preservation of food as well as a tonic drink. Salt has been regarded to rejuvenate the body. Surrounding oneself with salt crystal rocks relieves one of respiratory, asthma and allergy illnesses. Joint pains are also alleviated when you are surrounded by the rock salt crystals.
Don't use a salt lamp and a humidifer together. I did it, and my entire house was covered with a thin salt layer. It seems that the humidifier water carried the salt particles all over the house. It took me days to clean the piano black electronics (Xbox 360 S, black Wii, TV) and my book cases (books were covered in a layer of salt as well). Horrible experience.
The most talked about Himalayan salt lamp benefits is to do with personal health. Being natural and absolutely no chemical and helps the bodies condition. Mixing Himalayan Salt crystal with water is known as Sole’ which had been known in the olden days at the life’s soup. The reaction combining the salt and water is called brine. This aids in balancing the positive and negative ions of the water. This combination hydrolizes the molecules in the brine therefore makes a noticeable vibration in the body. This solution when taken is specially effective when a person is sick. Taking one teaspoon of the solution (250ml water) on an empty stomach each morning is advisable. This solutions helps in detoxifying the body of impurities. This solution is also great as the mineral content is easily absorbed in the skin.

I bought a salt lamp on a Friday night and plugged it in 24/7 until today (Monday). I had a tremendous headache on Saturday and Sunday mornings, relieved after I left the house. Monday I was home all day and the headache became rather violent -- so much so that I started looking up info about salt lamps and headaches on the internet. I am not prone to headaches nor have I ever been! I unplugged the lamp and received immediate relief! Needless to say, I was somewhat stunned by this revelation.

A large block of salt, like a pink Himalayan salt rock crystal, works by attracting the water molecules in your room. In so doing, it also pulls in all the pollutants and contaminants attached to these molecules. The salt rock lamp helps to detoxify your room by capturing and holding these particles so they aren’t left floating around for you to breathe in. Then, as the bulb heats the lamp, the water vapor is released back into the air, but the rock salt lamp retains the contaminants.

Himalayan salt lamps purify air through the power of hygroscopy, meaning that they attract water molecules from the surrounding environment then absorb those molecules – as well as any foreign particles they may be carrying – into the salt crystal. As the HPS lamp warms up from the heat produced by the light bulb inside, that same water then evaporates back into the air and the trapped particles of dust, pollen, smoke, etc remain locked in the salt.
Salt is hygroscopic, which means it attracts water molecules to itself. Being the big hunk of salt that it is, a Himalayan salt lamp is believed to work by attracting the water molecules. This water vapor can also carry indoor air pollutants like mold, bacteria and allergens. Once the water vapor comes in contact with the salt lamp, the pollutants are believed to remain trapped in the salt. Since the lamp is heated, the salt dries out and is able to continue the cycle of attracting water vapor and pollutants, releasing the water vapor back into the air but holding on to the health-hazardous pollutants.
A salt lamp is simply a chunk of mined salt that has been hollowed out to allow room for a lightbulb or tiny candle. The light glows through the medium of the salt crystal, which can range in color from a dark salmon pink to a pale orange. Salt crystals for salt lamps are mined in Russia and central Europe as well as in the Himalayas. Salt lamps make attractive accent lights. Their main attraction, however, is that the heating of the salt causes the crystal to release negative ions (often called simply 'ions').
The structure aspect is important, says Beauchamp. One way to get crystals to generate ions is to alter the shape of its crystal structure via temperature, something that can happen if a crystal structure is asymmetric. He points to a crystal called lithium tantalate, which changes its crystal structure when heated up in such a way as to create areas of high and low electrical potential when heated or cooled. This property allows it to generate an electric field that could, in theory, ionize the air around it. Sodium chloride’s chemical structure is a symmetrical cube that does not have the capability to generate high electric fields in the vicinity of a crystal.

EDIT: After a bit more research it seems the manufacturer may have changed the dimmer to a safer version recently. Here is a picture of mine for reference. If your dimmer has these markings it is the version that is faulty and will burn up. The little thing next to the cover is the transistor that burned up. It used to have three terminals but the other one disintegrated.

Pink Himalayan salt rock lamps provide a soothing, therapeutic glow to any room in which they’re placed. They could be used as an integral part of an altar or simply tasteful design elements to improve any mystical and meditative space in your home. Whether you’re looking to improve the atmosphere in your home office or create a space that inspires the life you want to live, a Himalayan salt lamp could be the perfect solution.
