I got this as a gift for my daughter last year. Recently, she smelled an electrical smell coming from her bedroom and discovered that the dimmer switch on this lamp had melted. She is just lucky it did not start a fire. We saw a post on fb the other day that indicated that another company of salt lamps was having this problem. I also have one from this company too and am now afraid to leave it unattended. What is up with these dimmer switches?
Himalayan pink salt lamps help clean the air through an operation called hygroscopy, which attracts and absorbs contaminated water molecules from the immediate environment and locks them into the salt crystal. The process has the amazing ability to remove cigarette smoke, dust and other contaminants from the air. This benefit is particularly popular, as salty air acts as an overall health booster and can help clear the air passages.
Deep within the foothills of the Himalayan mountains, the purest salt in the world is harvested. Their talented craftsmen carefully select the unique salt crystals that are used to create their salt crystal lamps. Every Wrought Iron Kettle Shaped Basket Himalayan 10" Salt Lamp is an individual work of art and unique in its own style, color, design, shape, and size. Create a soothing, healthy environment for those you love. Purify indoor air with nature's natural ionizer. As the salt crystals...

That being said, one thing you will have to keep in mind is making sure you avoid purchasing a fake Himalayan salt crystal lamp. Most salt lamps emit a soft, warm glow. Be leery of lamps that give off too much light. Also, some crystal lamps are white. Himalayan white crystals do exist but are rare and expensive. So if you find a white crystal lamp and a low price, be cautious. Lastly, make sure the crystal was mined from Kewra, Pakistan, or elsewhere along the Himalayas—the only place where true Himalayan salt is found.

Salt lamps, which are merely light bulbs of varying wattages placed within blocks of rock salt of varying sizes, have become an increasingly popular product in the alternative medicine scene and are marketed as “natural ionizers.” An ionizer, in theory, produces ions, which are atoms or molecules with a net positive or negative charge caused by an uneven number of protons to electrons.

Mined from a 250 million-year-old dried seabed, pink Himalayan salt is thought to have many beneficial health properties. This salt lamp gives off what might be called a primordial glow, one part sunset, one part molten lava, creating a light source that captivates all who are near it. Adjust the simple electronic dimmer to get the desired intensity of glow. A metal base is filled with Himalayan salt, and one 15 W incandescent light bulb (included).

We need light to see, but the light that we frequently use is overly bright and emits at frequencies that are overwhelming to our eyes. Unfortunately, there was no sufficient alternative to typical light sources until the invention of the Himalayan salt lamp. The versatile salt stones come in natural and shaped sculptures which have a unique aesthetic that’s unmatched. The pinkish-orange hue that the lamp emits is soothing and warm, but you can also try a multicolor USB lamp to pick a color that fits your architectural dreams. In addition to the visible effect on the ambiance, salt possesses a quality known as hygroscopy that absorbs water vapor and the attached microbes from the air. They also emit negative ions that reverse the effect of positive ionization from other technological devices which are known to have detrimental health effects over time such as increasing the risk of cancer. Combined with the natural beauty of the hazy, soft light that is more enjoyable than a bright overhead or grating florescent light, a Himalayan Rock Salt Lamp will instantly improve the ambiance of any room in a natural and healthy way. Adding a Himalayan rock salt lamp will instantly improve the ambiance of any room in a natural and healthy way.
One of the health detriments of breathing lots of positive ions in the air is that the cilia (microscopic hairs) which line the trachea (aka: windpipe) become sluggish and don’t work as well to keep contaminants out of our lungs. As a Himalayan pink salt lamp absorbs water and particles from the air, it also takes positive ions with them. Then, when the heated salt releases cleansed water vapor back into the air, it also expels negative ions which have the opposite effect on our airways – increasing cilial activity to keep your lungs clear.
I bought a salt lamp on a Friday night and plugged it in 24/7 until today (Monday). I had a tremendous headache on Saturday and Sunday mornings, relieved after I left the house. Monday I was home all day and the headache became rather violent -- so much so that I started looking up info about salt lamps and headaches on the internet. I am not prone to headaches nor have I ever been! I unplugged the lamp and received immediate relief! Needless to say, I was somewhat stunned by this revelation.
A fireside glow holds a special place in our hearts thanks to the beauty and warmth it casts around it, making an ordinary evening into something special and unique. Now, a busy modern life keeps the majority of us from having the time to get away from the constant barrage of radiation and information that technology is throwing at us. You can get a glow that's just as soothing with even more health benefits with a Himalayan basket salt lamp.

If you’ve spent any time in a new-age shop recently or toured the non-grocery aisles of Whole Foods or even visited a Bed, Bath & Beyond, you may have seen light pink, rocklike glowing lamps known as salt lamps. The lamps are quite literally rock-shaped slabs of salt with a hole drilled in the bottom. A small light bulb with a cord is inserted to illuminate it from the inside, and voila, you have a salt lamp.
Everyday appliances such as televisions, cell phones, computers and tablets release positive ions into the air constantly. These and other common electronics can cause an overflow of electromagnetic radiation (EM), which, although invisible, is believed to cause some serious long-term effects. Constant exposure to EM radiation is known primarily to cause fatigue, increase stress and weaken the immune system. Himalayan salt lamps emit negative ions and cancel out positive ones. Therefore, by neutralizing electromagnetic radiation, they help reduce artificial frequencies and even prevent static buildup.
The positive results seen in negative ionization studies may be caused by the placebo effect; the few studies showing benefits don't show a clear relationship between perceived benefits and ion concentration, Malin said. "You could have 300 [ions] per cubic centimeter or 1 million per cubic centimeter and people would say, 'Yep, I'm feeling better,'" Malin said.
Himalayan salt lamps are believed to filter dust, mold, mildew and pet dander from indoor air. Just as a nasal saline spray uses salt to clear airways, they help to relieve allergy symptoms of all kinds. Those who struggle with asthma also claim to benefit from Himalayan salt. It is such an effective breathing aid that certain manufacturers have produced Himalayan salt inhalers targeted toward sufferers of asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory issues.
Match the beauty of a natural Himalayan salt lamp with the power of technology with a multicolor USB salt lamp. All of the benefits that you expect from a Himalayan salt crystal lamp are featured, most notably its ability to draw in moisture and purify the toxins that you may have in your environment from the air in a process known as hygroscope. They also have the natural orange-pink glow that has made Himalayan salt crystal lamps famous throughout the world.

Even though they don’t make a huge difference in negative ions and they aren’t going to be as effective as an air purifier, they make a great addition to a space and definitely have a positive impact in some way. The aesthetic alone makes the lamp worth keeping around, and if it has an effect on the air and helps to calm our minds even in the slightest, then it’s even more worth it!

Last, but not least: Himalayan pink salt lamps are environmentally friendly. While only an estimate, the reserves from which HPS is mined measure somewhere between 80 and 600 million tons and is projected to last for at least another 350 years at the current extraction rate. The base of an HPS lamp is generally carved from a sustainable wood such as neem. Some lamps use a low-wattage bulb which consumes very little energy while others are powered by a lit candle.
So yes, they’re beautiful, and you’re totally welcome to get one for that purpose. It’s just unlikely to provide any measurable medical benefits. But if you want one to add to your meditation routine or because it fits with your decor, go for it. “It’s a nice new-age prop to have,” Kogan says. “But also we have to be smart and not fall prey to marketing claims.”
That doesn’t mean the lamps are totally harmless. The retailer Michaels had to recall several due to shock and fire hazards in January 2017, and Kogan says it’s possible the lamp could pose problems for people who are already struggling with lung issues. “Some people with interstitial lung disease, such as pulmonary fibrosis for example, or cystic fibrosis, they may be sensitive to the salt particles themselves,” Kogan acknowledged.

And I’m a sucker for lighting. I own various smart LED lights, an artificial dawn simulator, multi color LED strips, special bulbs which are all great to adjust the hue to a certain time of the day (orange hugging bed time), blue-ish when it’s hot weather, another hue during movie time.) but still, none of these lights emits the soothing glow my HPS lamp does.

"There has been some talk in the holistic community about the fact that electromagnetic radiation from cellphones, from microwaves, from computers, creates positive ionization of our body," Kogan explained to TODAY. "The talk has been that the negative ions supposedly produced by the lamps help to neutralize the positive charge. But to be honest with you... I haven't seen any large studies that would confirm this."

We have a lot of experience with observing ions. What we did with the lamp, since it’s supposed to make negative ions, was to place it adjacent to the inlet and, just by itself, we observed no ions at all. We turned it on and looked for negative ions. We looked for positive ions. We waited for the lamp to heat up. The bulb inside eventually does heat the rock salt, but we didn’t see anything.

The Himalayan Salt Glowing Crystal 9" Table Lamp is made from a chunk of pink salt crystal rock that was taken from the salt mines found in underground caves in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. The Himalayan salt lamp makes use of the minerals that have been preserved for millions of years, releasing their special properties through the introduction of heat from an electric bulb of from the flame of a candle. These special properties emitted are responsible for promoting the health and...
[…] Many natural living advocates claim that the negative salt ions that are released by heating the salt can boost blood flow, improve sleep, increase levels of serotonin in the brain, and calm allergy or asthma symptoms. It has also been said that the negative ions are known to neutralize electromagnetic radiation from household electronics, as well as prevent the build up of static electricity. (source) […]
Cilia are the finite hairs that line the windpipe and act like microscopic breathing filters. According to studies, positive ions decrease cilial activity while, conversely, negative ions have a more increasing and positive effect. Himalayan salt lamps are therefore believed to improve breathing by releasing negative ions that filter foreign particles and keep the lungs cleaner in general.
