They’re a popular way to decorate for the crunchiest among us (full disclosure: I have two) and depending on the size can run anywhere from $15 to hundreds. While there’s no question the lamps have a beautiful, natural feel to them, many people are suggesting they’re more than something pretty to look at. Most of the claims revolve around the idea that the lamp emits negative ions, which they claim can boost mood, purify the air and reduce asthma triggers.

Received 2 as a Christmas gift from my husband hoping to help with my sinuses. Can't speak for that as I've only had them on for 2 days. They are nice size. Love them and plan to purchase 2 more for my house. Love that they have a dimmer switch but wish it were closer to the lamp as you have to see the cord or reach behind other things to turn it on/off. I just leave mine on.
Salt lamps have been known for their many uses including alleviating stress, discarding bacteria and other pollutants, and providing a low source of lighting for a relaxing atmosphere. This is mostly due to its ability to produce negative ions when heated. Negative ions are invisible particles with a negative electric charge in the form of molecules or oxygen atoms. They can be found in nature through changes in the weather, such as thunderstorms or sunrays, which generate radioactive rays that break down air molecules into mostly negative ions.
Your Himalayan salt lamp will be perfect no matter what, well, because it's yours! The carved salt is sculpted naturally, so no two lamps are the same, making your salt lamp a statement piece. Some salt lamps feature a dimmer option allowing you to control the amount of light they emit, creating a very peaceful glow. There are many different sizes of salt lamps, from small to extra-large, so you can fit them perfectly in every open space. The salt crystal lamp is the perfect purifier, because it also acts as a decorative accent piece to your bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, dining room and more! You'll be ready to rejuvenate and heal spiritually with Spencer's selection of salt lamps. The relaxing ambiance creates extra positive energy for easy living. Himalayan salt lamps are a must-have when you're looking for peace of mind and a healthier lifestyle. Why buy a regular lamp when you can buy a salt lamp that provides you with a Himalayan glow from an included light bulb and also purifies your air at the same time? Light up your life and remove negative ions with a natural lamp made from pure salt.

The negative ions are generated by a continuous interplay of water attraction and evaporation. The salt crystal lamp attracts water molecules from the surrounding air to its warm surface. The water and salt form a solution. In the process of evaporation of the solution, due to the heat of the lamp, negatively charged ions are created. Both positive and negative ions are created but much more negative ions than positive ions are created, therefore providing a surplus of negative ions. Natrium [another word for sodium] is positively charged. This unique ion emission interplay ability with water is because of salt’s neutral atomic structure.
An awesome way to increase exposure to negative ions is to spend more time in nature, especially around water. Himalayan salt lamps are said to emit negative ions in small amounts and cancel out positive ones. By neutralizing electromagnetic radiation, they may help reduce the negative health effects of harmful electrosmog. Balancing positive and negative ions also may help reduce airborne infections. (4)
While not a “health benefit” at first glance, static is pesky stuff. It causes stress, embarrassment, and frustration. Static zaps you when you least expect it, as you’re reaching for a door handle, kissing your husband or wife before bed, or trying to pet your dog or cat. Static can give you a bad hair day, make it impossible to clean crumbs or coffee grounds off of the kitchen counter, and even cause you to accidentally go to work with a sock stuck to the back of your shirt…

These studies, however, used high concentrations of negative ions generated by industrial scale ion generators. Seeing as we have uncovered no evidence to support the claim a salt lamp produces any ions, the notion that a $29.99 block of rock with a light bulb could rival the power of a specifically designed laboratory equipment seems dubious. Much of the pseudoscience written about the positive effects of negative ions similarly disregards scale in their analyses, equating negative ionization at any level as the same phenomenon.

Mauritane Salt Lamp is not only visually stunning but provides innumerable health benefits. It is natural negative ion generators. Simply put, salt attracts moisture. The interaction of humid air with the surface of the salt crystal releases negative ions. The negative ions bind to the position ions that are created by electronic devices known as “electronic smog” (computers, television screens, telephones, microwaves, etc.). The positively charged ions lose their damaging...

It feels like a miniature fireplace and just like with actual fires, I often find myself staring into the lamp. I think in some subconscious way it reminds of archaic times, when people lived in caves, the crude stone walls lit by the soothing, life-saving fire. Bringing about a primal sense of security. Its rocky exterior ushers nature into my home.
These photos look fine to me. But I have seen plenty of post from Kim and Chloe where they have photoshopped their babies to make them look more white skinned and blue-eyed. I find that highly disturbing, they are beautiful black babies and you let them be beautiful dark featured children. You are sending your daughter's a message that those features are not attractive. That is a disgusting and disturbing thing for a mother to do ,shame on you two.
Like several comments above, I also smelled something burning one night in my office and couldn’t figure out what was the culprit for awhile. When I located the source of the problem and tried to turn off the salt lamp, I almost burned my hand by touching the dimmer/switch. As you can see from the photo, part of it was melted. Glad I was there that night. Or my office would have been on fire!
Cilia are the finite hairs that line the windpipe and act like microscopic breathing filters. According to studies, positive ions decrease cilial activity while, conversely, negative ions have a more increasing and positive effect. Himalayan salt lamps are therefore believed to improve breathing by releasing negative ions that filter foreign particles and keep the lungs cleaner in general.
I have purchased six of these salt lamps. 2 for me and 4 for friends and relatives. They make a great gift. I have one on in my livingroom during the day and one in my bedroom at night. It may just be in my head but I actually do believe I sleep better. I love the beautiful glow and the dimmer switch is great. It can be very bright, very dim or many degrees of either. It makes a great conversation piece, nd gets lots of compliments.

I think people should just try them for their selves and make up their own minds. I know a someone that has been a teacher for 30 plus years and she swears by them. She has used these salt lights in her class room for the past 5yrs and like she said it’s just her opinion but her class rooms have been a lot calmer since she’s been using them. SHE has even gone as dark as to have themy off for months just to see if they were truly working. Oh ya she is a elementary teacher.
Even though these lamps are available in few shops around the country, the best deals are found online. These websites offer a wide range of collections, with specific features, slashed process, and reviews from valued customers. The reviews are helpful in narrowing down your search and give a very good idea about the quality of the product. Moreover, these websites have very good customer service and responsive sellers who will give you guarantee for the product.
Also, your citation of an EPA website is useless. It just links to the EPA’s IAQ site, which isn’t helpful in trying to figure out what you actually were using from the site. I don’t think I’d use WebMD as a source either if you want to appear reputable to the more intelligent people who can spot bullshit. (Not say WebMD doesn’t have valuable info. Kinda like Wikipedia, a lot is useful and valid, but I would never use it as a source.)
I bought a salt lamp recently from Salzburg, Austria and kept it on a table. But I seldom turn the lamp on. It is on the bottom of the table where I kept my laptop. I went on vacation for 10 days, and when I got back home, I saw water around the lamp and that water has corroded my laptop. Is this water acidic by nature? How can I stop water from the lamp? I need advice urgently.
"There has been some talk in the holistic community about the fact that electromagnetic radiation from cellphones, from microwaves, from computers, creates positive ionization of our body," Kogan explained to TODAY. "The talk has been that the negative ions supposedly produced by the lamps help to neutralize the positive charge. But to be honest with you... I haven't seen any large studies that would confirm this."
