Himalayan salt lamps purify air through the power of hygroscopy, meaning that they attract water molecules from the surrounding environment then absorb those molecules – as well as any foreign particles they may be carrying – into the salt crystal. As the HPS lamp warms up from the heat produced by the light bulb inside, that same water then evaporates back into the air and the trapped particles of dust, pollen, smoke, etc remain locked in the salt.

If you've been scratching your head over what exactly a Himalayan salt lamp is, here's a quick explainer. This wellness product is created out of pink salt crystals that are native to areas close to the Himalayas, like Pakistan. The pink salt is used in everything from cooking slabs for grilling to what's known as "salt therapy" at local spas. When it comes to the lamps, the pink salt is thought to release negative ions into your space, which would be able to get rid of dust particles that may affect your health. Because of that, many believe that it can do everything from increasing your energy levels to alleviating symptoms of allergies. There's also claims that these pink salt lamps can even help boost your overall mood and can help you sleep more soundly.
This explanation has the great benefit of sounding scientific. Who really knows how ions are formed in the first place or what will happen to blocks of heated salt rock, anyway? One person with pretty deep knowledge on the topic is Caltech professor of chemistry Jack Beauchamp, an expert in (among other things) the myriad processes that generate ions and the analytical methods used to detect those ions.
That doesn’t mean the lamps are totally harmless. The retailer Michaels had to recall several due to shock and fire hazards in January 2017, and Kogan says it’s possible the lamp could pose problems for people who are already struggling with lung issues. “Some people with interstitial lung disease, such as pulmonary fibrosis for example, or cystic fibrosis, they may be sensitive to the salt particles themselves,” Kogan acknowledged.
To accent the natural beauty of the salt crystals, it is housed in a decorative metal vase, perfect for the design-conscious home. Illuminate your room with a warm, pleasant and relaxing amber glow. It's a perfect choice in the center of a coffee table or desk. Great for meditation, yoga spaces, and as a nightlight. Also, you can try it as a Bedside lamp. Due to the natural variation in Himalayan Crystal salt, weight, size, color and shape may vary.
The unique salt lamp is made from natural salt crystals hand mined in the Himalayan mountains. Once lit the lamp will emit a calming amber color heating the salt with the included bulb releases negative ions into the air, creating an effect similar to an ionize and purifying the surrounding air. Due to the natural variation in crystal salt, weight, size, color, and shape may vary.

Scientists have studied the psychological and biological effects of positive and negative ions in the air for over 80 years. However, there seems to be no consensus as to whether these ions can actually influence a person’s physical and mental health. Currently, there is no consistent data to support the effects of air ions (either positive or negative) on sleep, relaxation, anxiety or mood (Perez, et. al, 2013).
Ions cannot be produced without an energy source. An “energy source” means heat or flame, radioactivity, frictional rubbing, electricity, evaporation, etc. Ions can also be produced by high-energy events, such as an open flame or a glowing hot object. Evaporating water will produce negative ions in the air and, as a consequence, leave the damaging positive charges behind in the water that hasn’t yet evaporated.
Despite numerous experimental and analytical differences across studies, the literature does not clearly support a beneficial role in exposure to negative air ions and respiratory function or asthmatic symptom alleviation. Further, collectively, the human experimental studies do not indicate a significant detrimental effect of exposure to positive air ions on respiratory measures. Exposure to negative or positive air ions does not appear to play an appreciable role in respiratory function.

In 1966, a hospital in Jerusalem conducted a study of thirty-eight infants suffering from respiratory problems. They cared for half of the infants in a ward without any ion change, and cared for the other half in a ward where a negative-ion generator was in use. “The researchers reported that neg-ions without any other treatment “ that is, no drugs “ seemed to cure attacks of asthma and bronchitis more quickly than drugs, antibiotics included… children treated with neg-ions were less prone to ‘rebound attacks’ (relapses)… the scientific report said that the tests ‘demonstrated that atmospheric ions have an effect on infants, especially those suffering from asthmatic bronchitis. Less scientifically, they found that the babies didn’t cry as often and as loudly as they did in normal air.” The Ion Effect, by Fred Soyka, p. 57, 1991.

Like several comments above, I also smelled something burning one night in my office and couldn’t figure out what was the culprit for awhile. When I located the source of the problem and tried to turn off the salt lamp, I almost burned my hand by touching the dimmer/switch. As you can see from the photo, part of it was melted. Glad I was there that night. Or my office would have been on fire!
