"Salt crystal is naturally hygroscopic, absorbing water molecules from the air. You will notice if your salt lamp remains unlit for long periods of time, it will begin to 'cry.' The heat from a small light bulb keeps these beautiful crystals dry and in turn releases negative ions (the healthy ones found in abundance in places like oceans, waterfalls, even your shower) into the air," according to the site.

Another side effect which results from over-exposure to positive ions in the air is that it robs you of quality sleep. This happens because those positively-charged particles can actually reduce blood and oxygen supply to the brain resulting in irregular sleep patterns. Himalayan pink salt lamps are natural negative ion generators, thus they can help to reverse this problem. Keep one or two around your bedroom to improve the air quality so you can get a better night’s sleep.
Pink Himalayan salt rock lamps provide a soothing, therapeutic glow to any room in which they’re placed. They could be used as an integral part of an altar or simply tasteful design elements to improve any mystical and meditative space in your home. Whether you’re looking to improve the atmosphere in your home office or create a space that inspires the life you want to live, a Himalayan salt lamp could be the perfect solution.
Just looking at the glow of a Himalayan salt lamp can be calming, which is therapeutic in and of itself, but what about the other health claims? To date, there aren’t any scientific studies focusing specifically on Himalayan salt lamp benefits. However, there is good reason to believe that a real Himalayan salt lamp may provide some health benefits given the other salt research out there as well as many encouraging user testimonies.
So Well Himalayan salt lamps do not generate negative ions themselves. They are “hygroscopic,” which means that they attract moisture… humidity… airborne water molecules; it is a natural property of sodium chloride (hygroscopy). Since they do not generate the negative ions, they need a heat source (in this case, heat from an incandescent bulb) to accelerate evaporation, which does produce negative ions. In more humid regions, an unlit salt lamp will eventually “cry,” even creating puddles of water at its base. It is this evaporation that generates the negative ions, which are beneficial to our health.
All matter (the human body, air, water, etc) is made up of molecules which are made up of atoms which are made up of three types of particles: protons (positive charge), electrons (negative charge), and neutrons (no charge). Electrons orbit their molecules like planets revolve around a star. Occasionally an electron flies off and when it does, it leaves behind a positively-charged ion whose sole purpose in life becomes to fill the void left by its little lost electron. In other words: it wants to steal a replacement electron from another molecule. Due to differences in molecular structure (number of electrons in the outermost orbit, strength and structure of electron bonds, etc) some materials lose electrons much more easily than others.
Salt is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water. This is why Himalayan pink salt crystals start to melt with prolonged exposure to high humidity. Thus, you should keep them away from household moisture sources like showers, dishwashers and laundry washing machines. It can be dangerous if the salt begins leaking onto the lamp holder. To avoid buying a substandard lamp holder, purchase a salt lamp that’s firmly connected to the base. It’s also ideal to find a salt lamp that has UL certification, which is an extra measure of safety assurance. (11)
One of the health detriments of breathing lots of positive ions in the air is that the cilia (microscopic hairs) which line the trachea (aka: windpipe) become sluggish and don’t work as well to keep contaminants out of our lungs. As a Himalayan pink salt lamp absorbs water and particles from the air, it also takes positive ions with them. Then, when the heated salt releases cleansed water vapor back into the air, it also expels negative ions which have the opposite effect on our airways – increasing cilial activity to keep your lungs clear.
When it comes to buying Himalayan pink salt lamps, coverage is determined by the size of the crystal. Smaller lamps (like this 5-8 lbs lamp) are good for the average bedroom, while larger lamps (like this 11-15 lbs lamp) are better for spaces like the living room or den. On average, calculate that 1 lb of Himalayan salt crystal will cleanse the air in approximately a 4′ x 4′ area.
Light therapy including bright light treatment and dawn simulation has proven helpful to decrease the severity of SAD symptoms. Bright light treatment alone was found to be effective against nonseasonal depression, with benefits comparable to antidepressant pharmacotherapy studies (Golden, et. al, 2005). However, the light provided by salt lamps is not similar to the light used in the study.
250 million years old, Himalayan salt improve air qualities by enriching it with negative ions, thus enhancing your well being and improving your health. Our Salt Crystal Lamps naturally neutralize the positive ions generated by electrical devices. Furthermore, each of our rock salt sculptures is a testament to the beauty and mystery of the Himalayan Mountains, glowing warm pink, amber and orange. Life in the 21st century has become stressful for your body, mind and spirit. Surround yourself with the elegant healing energy of our Salt Crystal Lamps and other salt products.
Himalayan salt lamps purify the air through hygroscopy. The salt lamp attracts water from surrounding areas and absorbs the water vapor molecules along with any particles that those molecules may be carrying. The light inside of the lamp helps the salt to warm up, making that water evaporate back into the air while the unwanted, foreign particles stay trapped inside the salt. Science is pretty neat, am I right?

Himalayan salt lamps are ideal for warmly illuminating your space, but also harbor healing qualities! The negative salt irons released by heating are said to help keep you calm, improve sleep, and increase levels of serotonin in the brain. Even when not in use, they add a natural touch to your ensemble, perfect for lodge-worthy living room looks and eclectic master suites alike. This one measures 7'' H x 7'' W x 7'' D.
What's more, the amount of air in the room is so huge relative to the size of the rock crystals that few of the pollutants circulating in the room could stick to the surface of the rock salt. Even if the lamps did manage to attract pollutants, the surface of the rock salt would quickly become coated with pollutants and no more could stick. Meanwhile, the air supply is always being replenished, either through ventilation systems or open doors or windows, bringing ever-more air pollutants into the room, he said.
We have a lot of experience with observing ions. What we did with the lamp, since it’s supposed to make negative ions, was to place it adjacent to the inlet and, just by itself, we observed no ions at all. We turned it on and looked for negative ions. We looked for positive ions. We waited for the lamp to heat up. The bulb inside eventually does heat the rock salt, but we didn’t see anything.

[…] The most ambitious of Himalayan salt lamp vendors may promise you anything from better sleeping cycles to complete neutralization of positive ions associated with feelings of stress, fatigue and low moods, but as much as we’d like to believe a single salt lamp will have the plethora of benefits a 45-minute session in a salt cave does, it’s hard to measure or quantify these benefits. Negative ions bind to positive ions in the environment, neutralizing them before they have a chance to get into our bodies and wreak havoc. Studies have shown negative ions to help increase serotonin and oxygen levels in the brain, which can decrease drowsiness, alleviate stress, and boost energy. In fact, some studies suggest they’re as effective as antidepressants for people experiencing chronic depression or seasonal affective disorder.
To get the full benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps its generally recommended to leave the salt lamp turned on all the time, as the more you leave it on, the greater air ionizing and purifying effect it will have. The lamps are generally safe to leave on at all times, but if you plan on to leave your home for an extended period of time, for example if you go on vacation, then it’s best to unplug it until you return.
Thanks for sharing such detailed information about salt lamps. These lamps are really very good. I have them in my home and office and I just love them. They actually clean the air and make it fresh and pure. Their soft glow make the atmosphere so calm and peaceful. I have them in different shapes. I cannot imagine my home without them. You can visit the given website of ittefaq.co to know more about different shapes and sizes of these amazing lamps.
Hi Nancy, I’ve read a comment of a lady who advised that When not using the lamp for long periods of time, don’t leave your lamp in a humid room, as it attracts moisture from the air (as part of its function) and it began to weep all over her furniture. I have also read a recommendation of Himalayan salt lamps manufacturer that recommends placing your Himalayan salt lamp onto a decorative plate or holder to avoid it leaving marks on furniture. The manufacturer also recommends that if you plan on having your lamp switched off for an extended period, he recommends unplugging the power cord, separating the cord from your salt lamp, and wrapping the salt lamp in a plastic bag to keep it air tight. This will prevent the lamp from pooling water.
Rose McClintick, a QXCI Practitioner and Biofeedback Analyst, who has been working in the holistic health field for seven years, tested our salt lamps and offered an enthusiastic endorsement in regard to their generation of negative ions: “Regarding the salt lamps, I can tell you that my test shows that it has improved the negative ions. (They) will be recommended to have in the bedrooms. You get both working for you, improved neg. ions and a better night’s sleep.” Zykoff Bodywork
As mentioned earlier, there are many different types of salt lamps that range in color to style. Among the most common are lamps created by inserting a light source directly into a salt crystal or a basket of crystals with a light source underneath. In these cases, the differences are for the most part purely aesthetic, and your choice comes down to finding the right solution for your tastes and complementing the environment in your home.

At first I was a bit concerned after reading reviews about the dimmer switch (basically a variable resistor) heating up, melting, and causing a fire. My kid bought this Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp for my wife as a Christmas gift because she has been wanting one for a long time. I read up on the fire hazard and noticed that a recall has been placed on this salt lamp. All of the one star rated "fire warning" reviews are from many months or years ago. So I assume that the batch that was sent out has had this dimmer issue fixed. Basically a higher wattage variable resistor is needed to fix this problem.
