The structure aspect is important, says Beauchamp. One way to get crystals to generate ions is to alter the shape of its crystal structure via temperature, something that can happen if a crystal structure is asymmetric. He points to a crystal called lithium tantalate, which changes its crystal structure when heated up in such a way as to create areas of high and low electrical potential when heated or cooled. This property allows it to generate an electric field that could, in theory, ionize the air around it. Sodium chloride’s chemical structure is a symmetrical cube that does not have the capability to generate high electric fields in the vicinity of a crystal.
It is possible that the negative ions released by Himalayan salt lamps may protect against airborne germs. In addition to removing these contaminants from the air, the salt also allows the body to filter air more effectively in an attempt to block any foreign particles from making it into the lungs. This can prevent the advancement of coughing, sneezing, sore throats, and other minor symptoms of the common cold.
Crystal salt is naturally hygroscopic, absorbing water molecules from the air. You will notice if your salt lamp remains unlit for long periods of time, it will begin to “cry”  The heat from a small light bulb keeps these beautiful crystals dry and in turn releases a negative ions (the healthy ones found in abundance in places like oceans, waterfalls, even your shower) into the air.

There have been more than 2,000 studies exposing the toxic effects of electromagnetic fields from all sources. Scientists have come to the scary conclusion that “chronic exposure to even low-level radiation (like that from cell phones) can cause a variety of cancers, impair immunity, and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, heart disease, and many other ailments.” (3)
That doesn’t mean the people who have experienced benefits are entirely wrong, though. Kogan told SheKnows it’s possible the lamp provides a placebo effect. Essentially, a person believes the salt lamps will help, there’s a psychological component to their issue, and thus the lamp does relieve some of their symptoms. “It’s more of a mind-body effort, really, because it’s not like there’s some kind of biochemical being released from the lamp,” she said.

Himalayan salt is now used in inhalers to bring relief to asthma and allergy sufferers. Salt therapy is also used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. COPD is a debilitating and degenerative lung disease characterized by the restriction of airflow in and out of the lungs. According to the Lung Institute, “Some people have found salt therapy to be an effective option for relieving symptoms of lung disease, resulting in easier breathing.”

I bought three of these and gave two for Christmas gifts and they are amazing!! I noticed the minute I opened the box this wonderful fresh smell, like a salty ocean breeze! Each one was beautiful and uniquely different. The bulb is included and everyone especially loved the dimmer switch feature. These are indeed the real deal and are carved from Himalayan salt. They're simply beautiful and we're and exceptional deal at less than $15.00!!
So Well Himalayan salt lamps do not generate negative ions themselves. They are “hygroscopic,” which means that they attract moisture… humidity… airborne water molecules; it is a natural property of sodium chloride (hygroscopy). Since they do not generate the negative ions, they need a heat source (in this case, heat from an incandescent bulb) to accelerate evaporation, which does produce negative ions. In more humid regions, an unlit salt lamp will eventually “cry,” even creating puddles of water at its base. It is this evaporation that generates the negative ions, which are beneficial to our health.
The Himalayan pink salt lamp lets off this beautiful pink/orange glow that is reminiscent of a sunset. Just as the blue light is energizing, the slower wavelengths in the warmer colors are relaxing to the mind and easier on the eyes. I think about it like the difference in the natural energy cycle at high noon and at sunset. The salt lamp is great for balancing the extra blue light.

Beautiful and relaxing are the 2 main words I use to describe this Salt Lamp. It creates a very peaceful ambiance in the home and I find it to be therapeutic when I do my yoga. It is well made, and has a good weight to it. This salt lamp also has different sets of lighting to adjust from dim, medium and bright. It creates a beautiful atmosphere in any room and I love it.
Where do you purchase one that can be left on for long periods of time? I want to be sure if my fiance leaves the thing on overnight, we won’t burn the entire house down! My friend told me about the base of your salt lamp really matters. Wood doesn’t do so good, but having a steel base helps to absorb moisture and its safe to use for long periods of time. There’s so many brands out there manufacturing these, so be sure to look out for a steel base!
Said to improve sleep by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain and adding calming energy to the room, Himalayan salt lamps are a must-have for any bedroom. Take this one for example: made in Nepal, it features a circular wood base topped off by a natural 8" rock-shaped design that has been handcrafted from salt crystals with a pink hue. When you turn the light on inside, it casts a warm, amber-hued glow over your ensemble. Arrives in a set of two.
If you struggle with asthma or allergies, you may also benefit from an air purification system or machine, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Indoor Allergen Committee. Air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can reduce the amount of particulate in the air and improve asthma symptoms. You can also install a high-efficiency filter on your forced air system to help remove particulates.
Thanks to sites like this one,I bought 3 salt lamps. One that’s about a foot, and a half tall, with 2 smaller ones for: the master bedroom, living room, and home office. It’s been over 3 months now,and I feel they are keeping the air fresher/cleaner than my air purifier ever did. As for affecting our mood.I would say to some extent, yes due to the salt lamo’s warm glow. I always prefer, and use a dimmer for low light anyways. Trying to be “greener” by reducing emissions as much as possible. Drive a plugin car. At some point,I would love to install a battery wall, powered by solar.
There are a lot of products out there that claim to make your home a healthier place. Light therapy alarm clocks are thought to improve your overall mood and help you wake up more naturally; weighted blankets are designed to help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. And Himalayan salt lamps are said to improve your home's overall air quality, which may be why they've grown in popularity over the past few years.

There are two main types of salt lamps, both made from salt rocks mined in Pakistan near the Himalayas. One consists of a large chunk of pink salt crystal that has been hollowed out to make space for a light bulb. The other is a bowl made of wire, metal or even Himalayan pink salt filled with slightly smaller pink salt rocks with a light bulb placed underneath the salt crystals. When you turn the lamp on, the light shines through and between the salt crystals.

Beauchamp was skeptical that a heated block of sodium chloride would produce ions (any amount of them, positive or negative ones, let alone “boundless amounts”) but not so skeptical that he didn’t want to hook up the most popular salt lamp available from Amazon.com to his lab’s quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. This instrument, in essence, sucks in air from directly around the solid and analyzes the mass and charge of particles captured by the instrument. Here’s Beauchamp description of what he did in his own words:

As I described earlier, a Himalayan salt lamp by its salty nature is able to easily attract water vapor to it. With this water vapor often comes indoor air pollutants, including allergens, mold and bacteria. When the water hits the heated lamp, the salt traps the pollutants but releases the water vapor. This cycle repeats while the lamp is on and warm. By removing pollutants from the air, the salt lamp leaves you with cleaner, healthier air.

Match the beauty of a natural Himalayan salt lamp with the power of technology with a multicolor USB salt lamp. All of the benefits that you expect from a Himalayan salt crystal lamp are featured, most notably its ability to draw in moisture and purify the toxins that you may have in your environment from the air in a process known as hygroscope. They also have the natural orange-pink glow that has made Himalayan salt crystal lamps famous throughout the world.
If you've been wanting to purchase a Himalayan salt crystal lamp for your home, but the natural stone shape hasn't felt quite right, then take a look at the modern allure of a salt lamp carved into a pristine decorative Himalayan salt crystal lamp shape. Cast a regal shine over your personal kingdom with the orb lamp, create a serene space for seeking enlightenment with the pyramid shape, or mimic a row of torches through your foyer with these flame-shaped lamps.

rubbing alcohol kills those suckers FAST! You have to be careful because rubbing alcohol is flammable but it is highly effective. Our downstairs neighbor in our old apt. building had a nest of bedbugs he never bothered to get rid of and they spread through our building. We ended up with an infestation ourselves which two visits from an exterminator was not able to eradicate. I was desperate and at the end of my rope when I started trying all different types of chemicals, pledge, windex, you name it.. nothing really worked until I spilled rubbing alcohol on my bed by accident. Next thing you know, they were avoiding that side of the bed… I started spraying the mattress every night before bed (leaving the room until the fumes settled). problem solved! We’ve since moved and not a single one made it to our new place, THANK GOD!
After having this salt lamp for two months, the light bulb make a loud noise and sparked. I tried putting in a new bulb and it still wouldn't work. This ended up happening to three of the five salt lamps we purchased (I purchased five of these at once from this seller). I tried getting in contact with the seller and they never responded so now I'm stuck with 3 salt lamps that can't be used.
