A 2013 study in the journal BMC Psychiatry reviewed data from several studies found that overall, negative air ionization has no overall effect on anxiety, mood, sleep or personal comfort. However, those studies did document a slight reduction in depressive symptoms, with higher levels of impact from higher concentrations of negative ionization. The analysis also showed a slight improvement in seasonal affective disorder, even with lower ion concentrations. The explanation for this weak effect is that the sun's stronger rays in the summer produce more negative ions than during the winter, and negative ionizers are potentially mimicking those summer-like conditions, said Dr. Alan Manevitz, a psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. However, a more established way to mimic summer conditions is with light therapy, which has been studied more extensively, he said.
I appreciate the talents of writers to be able to express that which I myself struggle with to translate into words. One paragraph cannot begin to encompass the substance and specifics of how, when and exact dilution methods, methods of delivery, etc. Blue8Ball is spot on regarding the adverse consequences resulting from misuse of essential oils as well as the nonsense being peddled by greedy uninformed or (even worse, lacking a conscience ) entrepreneurs that excel at sales and marketing. I too, find it frustrating to arrive at the end of an article only to feel mislead by headlines. Sometimes I wonder if the authors of these articles choose the words used to catch our attention in the headlines, and if not, does the individual who does feel any sense of responsibility for integrity?
Hi Alex, Himalayan salt lamp is a type of rock salt lamp – they are made from salt crystals from the Himalayan mountain regions and come in variety of shades such as white or orange/pink. There are other rock salt lamps that come from a number of other locations throughout the world (although some claim that the finest quality comes from the Himalaya).
This product is a customized 3-in-1 version that could be used as an essential oil diffuser, humidifier and salt lamp. When it used as aroma diffuser and humidifier. It is designed to humidify the air to make you feel relaxed in the dry environment, like an air-conditioned room in the winter. It could also be used as crystal salt lamps that add a beautiful warm glow to any environment and emit a stream of negative ions which can purify the air against allergens and pollutants. Negative ions are...

Since positive ions are often created by electronic devices like computers, TVs, microwaves, and even vacuum cleaners, they can often exacerbate problems like allergies, stress and sleep trouble. Negative ions can neutralize positive ions (they bond together) and help cleanse the air. Additionally, salt lamps offer a soothing glow that many people find relaxing.
So many things around us nowadays release electromagnetic radiation in the form of unhealthy positive ions — things like your cell phone, computer and television, just to name a few.  This electromagnetic radiation (EM), aka electrosmog, may be invisible but is believed to cause some serious long-term effects. Constant exposure to EM radiation is known primarily to cause fatigue, increase stress and weaken the immune system.
Thanks for sharing such detailed information about salt lamps. These lamps are really very good. I have them in my home and office and I just love them. They actually clean the air and make it fresh and pure. Their soft glow make the atmosphere so calm and peaceful. I have them in different shapes. I cannot imagine my home without them. You can visit the given website of ittefaq.co to know more about different shapes and sizes of these amazing lamps.
All the claims described above rely on the singularly false assertion that a block of salt with a light bulb inserted inside will naturally emit negative ions. That argument, when intelligible, usually invokes some sort of interplay between the salt, which attracts water from the air, and the heat from the light evaporating that water, as described in a non-peer-reviewed 2010 paper in the Pakistan Journal of Molecular Biology:
This wonderful accent light features a crystal salt block that comes from a mine at the foot of the Himalayas. Placed over a light source, the stone shines with a warm and inviting glow. It makes a perfect room accent in home theater settings, or add visual interest to side tables and display shelves. The stone sits in a hardwood base. The shape of stone may vary slightly. Salt Crystal is a Natural Air Purifier. The Himalayan Natural Crystal Salt Lamp also works as an air purifier. When lit...
Thanks to sites like this one,I bought 3 salt lamps. One that’s about a foot, and a half tall, with 2 smaller ones for: the master bedroom, living room, and home office. It’s been over 3 months now,and I feel they are keeping the air fresher/cleaner than my air purifier ever did. As for affecting our mood.I would say to some extent, yes due to the salt lamo’s warm glow. I always prefer, and use a dimmer for low light anyways. Trying to be “greener” by reducing emissions as much as possible. Drive a plugin car. At some point,I would love to install a battery wall, powered by solar.
So Well Himalayan salt lamps do not generate negative ions themselves. They are “hygroscopic,” which means that they attract moisture… humidity… airborne water molecules; it is a natural property of sodium chloride (hygroscopy). Since they do not generate the negative ions, they need a heat source (in this case, heat from an incandescent bulb) to accelerate evaporation, which does produce negative ions. In more humid regions, an unlit salt lamp will eventually “cry,” even creating puddles of water at its base. It is this evaporation that generates the negative ions, which are beneficial to our health.

Last, but not least: Himalayan pink salt lamps are environmentally friendly. While only an estimate, the reserves from which HPS is mined measure somewhere between 80 and 600 million tons and is projected to last for at least another 350 years at the current extraction rate. The base of an HPS lamp is generally carved from a sustainable wood such as neem. Some lamps use a low-wattage bulb which consumes very little energy while others are powered by a lit candle.
The bulb inside of the lamp heats the crystal and supports the ionizing effect. Salt itself is hygroscopic and attracts the water from the surroundings. You can often see that the salt lamp is damp or even wet, especially in more humid environments. Due to the gentle heat of the lamp, the water quickly evaporates and during the evaporation process the beneficial negative ions get created. They go on to bind with excessive positive ions (bacteria, molds and allergens all carry a positive charge) and neutralize the electronic smog in your home.
As I just said, Himalayan salt lamps are inherently fragile. Once you own one, you definitely need to be careful not to drop it or bang it into other solid objects because the salt crystal can be damaged very easily. This is actually a rare time when durability is not desirable. If your salt lamp is unaffected by a collision, it could likely be an imposter.
Ions cannot be produced without an energy source. An “energy source” means heat or flame, radioactivity, frictional rubbing, electricity, evaporation, etc. Ions can also be produced by high-energy events, such as an open flame or a glowing hot object. Evaporating water will produce negative ions in the air and, as a consequence, leave the damaging positive charges behind in the water that hasn’t yet evaporated.

The structure aspect is important, says Beauchamp. One way to get crystals to generate ions is to alter the shape of its crystal structure via temperature, something that can happen if a crystal structure is asymmetric. He points to a crystal called lithium tantalate, which changes its crystal structure when heated up in such a way as to create areas of high and low electrical potential when heated or cooled. This property allows it to generate an electric field that could, in theory, ionize the air around it. Sodium chloride’s chemical structure is a symmetrical cube that does not have the capability to generate high electric fields in the vicinity of a crystal.
Mauritane Handcrafted 6.75" Salt Lamp is not only visually stunning but provides innumerable health benefits. They are natural negative ion generators. Simply put, salt attracts moisture. The interaction of humid air with the surface of the salt crystal releases negative ions. The negative ions bind to the position ions that are created by electronic devices known as “electronic smog” (computers, television screens, telephones, microwaves, etc.). The positively charged ions lose their...

I did my research and know these can be great and they also can be fakes. This is the real deal and a reputable great company. Well packaged and price is spot on compared for amazon. I have only had it two days now so I can not speak of long term effects, but even simply as a lamp it is relaxing and alluring. I plan to get at least 3 more for our home.
