Ideally, you should place a lamp prominently in each room to feel the maximum benefit. Bedrooms and living areas are the best place to start as these are where you will spend the most time. Make sure that any lamp you choose is a genuine Himalayan Salt Lamp and not a cheap fake alternative as lamps made from rock salt will not produce the same health benefits.
Real Himalayan salt lamps are made of salt so it’s not surprising that they’re fragile objects. A good manufacturer knows this and has return policies that are flexible since there could be some damage in transit. If a salt lamp’s maker is extremely strict (like a “NO RETURNS” policy), then it makes you wonder if it’s a scam operation. This might not necessarily be the case, but some fake retailers have been known not to permit any returns because they know they’re not giving you the real thing.
All matter (the human body, air, water, etc) is made up of molecules which are made up of atoms which are made up of three types of particles: protons (positive charge), electrons (negative charge), and neutrons (no charge). Electrons orbit their molecules like planets revolve around a star. Occasionally an electron flies off and when it does, it leaves behind a positively-charged ion whose sole purpose in life becomes to fill the void left by its little lost electron. In other words: it wants to steal a replacement electron from another molecule. Due to differences in molecular structure (number of electrons in the outermost orbit, strength and structure of electron bonds, etc) some materials lose electrons much more easily than others.
Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.
You’ll typically find Himalayan salt lamps that give off a warm pinkish or orange hue. There is such a thing as a white Himalayan salt lamp, but it’s extremely rare and a lot more pricey than the colored ones. So if you find a white salt crystal lamp that’s not substantially more expensive than the pink/orange versions, steer clear because this is likely an imposter.
I have beautiful lamps from http://www.sowellmade.com, I use them in my birds rooms and all over the house. Even my dogs love them! They have these dimmers on them, which is excellent to have! I was told to keep them on as much as possible and use as many in the house as I could for best results. The company is wonderful! and the selection is wonderful. And I think they are fair trade which you never know when buying products made oversees how they are being made.
Hi Alex, Himalayan salt lamp is a type of rock salt lamp – they are made from salt crystals from the Himalayan mountain regions and come in variety of shades such as white or orange/pink. There are other rock salt lamps that come from a number of other locations throughout the world (although some claim that the finest quality comes from the Himalaya).
This claim stems from research performed on laboratory rats who were under anesthesia and essentially pumped directly with high concentrations of negatively ionized air. It goes without saying that humans are not rats, and a that specifically designed laboratory ionization instruments produce a whole lot more ions than a salt lamp, which, not to drive this point home too much, they do not.
Negative ions occur more often in nature and they are often created by things like lightening storms, sunlight, waterfalls, and ocean waves. Running water is considered nature’s greatest source of negative ions and may be one of the things that contributes to the refreshing scent of waterfalls and the beach. In fact, this is one of the reasons people often report feeling renewed or refreshed after a storm or after spending time at the beach.
Received 2 as a Christmas gift from my husband hoping to help with my sinuses. Can't speak for that as I've only had them on for 2 days. They are nice size. Love them and plan to purchase 2 more for my house. Love that they have a dimmer switch but wish it were closer to the lamp as you have to see the cord or reach behind other things to turn it on/off. I just leave mine on.
There are two main arguments one could make to suggest negative ions increase oxygen flow to the brain or provide you with more energy. The first one is that negative ions increase respiratory function and, as a consequence, would allow your body to deliver more oxygen overall. This claim, though oft repeated, has very little evidence to support it. A 2013 systematic review of papers investigating a relationship between exposure to ions and respiratory health stated:
It's important to note that no major studies have supported the health benefits of Himalayan salt lamps, even though plenty of people out there swear by them. But that being said, we still think this popular home decoration can make a great addition to your home. The lamp emits a pinkish hue that makes the ambience more warm and relaxing. Different designs can fit your home's aesthetic, including lamps shaped like cats or miniature versions, which make ideal night lights. Plus, it doesn't hurt that these lamps are currently trending in the home decor space.

I purchased this item from Amazon and a year or so later the dimmer switch stopped working. When I took it apart to inspect I found the transistor (which is severely undersized for this design) had overheated and burned up itself and the circuit board. I searched the part numbers online and discovered this is the *exact same* board that has been recalled by other manufacturers (i.e., Micheals). I do not understand why Amazon has not recalled their version of it yet. It is a fire waiting to happen. I would not recommend anyone using this product.
